WHAT IS FOLLICULOMETRY OR FOLLICULAR TRACKING

So you have been booked for a follicular tracking ultrasound scan, let's break it down in a bit

What is it?

Ultrasound examination of the ovaries to image the ovarian follicles (tiny egg like structures that release the female ovum every month) and detect proper count, growth and ovulation

Who needs it?

Women who need to be evaluated for infertility, menstrual and ovulation problems.

How is it done?

This is typically done in 3 or more visits, either daily or on alternate days, starting from day 8 to day 10 after the first day of the last menstruation. Although this may vary based on individual menstrual cycle length.

The scan is typically a transvaginal ultrasound although some women may have adequate visibility of their ovaries from a pelvic approach.

Ultrasound features can reveal, follicle growth pattern, an imminent ovulation or evidence of ovulation. Such information can be used by you or your doctor in planning your fertility management.

Any precaution?

Ultrasound scans are very safe and pose no radiation or heat hazard. Sexual activities can continue during the follicular tracking.

Further discuss with your doctor to clarify any required information and care.
